Oxytocin is a neuropeptide produced in the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland. It is one of the most studied behavioral neuropeptides in science, with over 1,000 published studies covering its roles in social behavior, bonding, anxiety, and sexual function.
The term 'bonding hormone' is accurate: oxytocin is released during physical touch, social bonding, sexual activity, and parent-child interaction. Intranasal administration allows it to reach the brain directly via the olfactory pathway.
Intranasal oxytocin activates oxytocin receptors in the amygdala, hypothalamus, and prefrontal cortex. These regions regulate fear and anxiety responses, social cognition, and reward processing. Activation reduces amygdala reactivity (the brain's fear center), increases dopamine signaling in reward circuits, and modulates cortisol (stress hormone) release.
