GHK-Cu (Glycine-Histidine-Lysine copper complex) is a tripeptide the body produces naturally. At age 20, plasma concentrations run around 200 ng/mL. By age 60, that number falls below 80 ng/mL โ a decline of over 60%. That drop corresponds directly with reduced collagen production, slower wound healing, and the structural changes we associate with skin aging.
Researchers first identified GHK in 1973. Since then it has accumulated one of the largest research bodies of any topical peptide, with published studies covering wound healing, collagen synthesis, hair follicle stimulation, and genome-level anti-aging effects.
GHK-Cu binds copper ions and carries them into skin tissue, where they activate signaling pathways in fibroblasts โ the cells responsible for producing collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. A landmark genome study identified GHK-Cu as influencing the expression of over 4,000 human genes: downregulating inflammatory and cancer-related pathways while upregulating genes involved in protein synthesis, antioxidant defense, and tissue repair.
The copper component is essential. It activates lysyl oxidase โ the enzyme responsible for collagen and elastin cross-linking that gives skin its structural integrity and resistance to sagging.
Published studies show topical GHK-Cu increases skin density and thickness, reduces fine line depth, improves laxity, and accelerates wound healing. One frequently cited study showed hair follicle stimulation comparable in magnitude to minoxidil. A comprehensive genome analysis by Dr. Loren Pickart documented GHK-Cu's influence on over 4,000 human genes โ one of the broadest documented effects of any single topical compound.
In a double-blind clinical study, GHK-Cu was shown to improve skin laxity, reduce fine lines, and increase dermal density after 12 weeks of twice-daily application. Compared to vitamin C and retinoic acid in a separate study, GHK-Cu produced superior improvements in skin density and thickness.
