AHK-Cu (Alanine-Histidine-Lysine copper complex) is a synthetic tripeptide that mirrors the copper-binding function of the naturally occurring GHK-Cu but with structural properties that favor topical delivery. Its smaller molecular weight allows it to penetrate into deeper layers of the dermis โ a key advantage for hair follicle stimulation and deep skin repair.
While GHK-Cu is better studied for surface skin remodeling, AHK-Cu reaches dermal structures that larger molecules cannot, making it the preferred ingredient for scalp and hair follicle applications.
Like GHK-Cu, AHK-Cu chelates copper ions and delivers them to target tissue. Once there, it activates collagen and elastin synthesis pathways in fibroblasts, promotes angiogenesis at injury sites, and modulates inflammatory signaling. The smaller molecular structure compared to GHK-Cu allows it to reach dermal layers that larger molecules cannot โ making it particularly effective in the dense tissue of the scalp.
In hair follicle research, AHK-Cu activates follicle stem cells and prolongs the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle โ the phase during which the hair shaft is actively growing.
Research has documented AHK-Cu's ability to stimulate hair follicle stem cells and extend the anagen phase of the hair cycle. Collagen synthesis promotion has been confirmed in dermal fibroblast studies. In anti-aging applications, AHK-Cu is frequently combined with GHK-Cu to achieve both surface and deep-layer coverage โ the two peptides working at complementary depths.
Studies comparing copper peptide penetration show AHK-Cu achieves significantly greater dermal depth than GHK-Cu in topical application, making the combination more comprehensive than either compound alone.
