NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a coenzyme present in every living cell. It serves two critical functions: as an electron carrier in cellular energy production (the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain), and as a required substrate for sirtuins โ enzymes central to DNA repair, gene expression regulation, and longevity signaling.
NAD+ levels decline approximately 50% between ages 40 and 60. This decline correlates with reduced mitochondrial efficiency, impaired DNA repair capacity, and declining function of NAD+-dependent enzymes. Restoring NAD+ levels has become a primary focus of longevity and metabolic health research.
NAD+ is required by sirtuins (SIRT1-7) โ proteins that regulate gene expression, stress resistance, and cellular metabolism.
