Retinol is the default anti-aging ingredient. Walk into any Sephora and half the serums mention it. Copper peptides โ specifically GHK-Cu โ have been studied since 1973 and have an arguably larger research body. They just never got the same marketing budget.

## How Retinol Works
Retinol (vitamin A) converts to retinoic acid in skin tissue, which binds to nuclear receptors and alters gene expression. The result: accelerated cell turnover, increased collagen production, and exfoliation of damaged surface cells.
The visible effects are real โ retinol is one of the most well-documented topical ingredients for reducing fine lines and improving skin texture. The catch: that accelerated turnover causes irritation, dryness, and photosensitivity, especially at higher concentrations. Most people need weeks to build tolerance.
## How GHK-Cu Works
GHK-Cu works differently. Instead of forcing accelerated turnover, it signals fibroblasts โ the skin cells that produce structural proteins โ to produce more collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. A landmark genome study showed GHK-Cu influences over 4,000 human genes, including upregulation of repair and synthesis pathways, and downregulation of inflammatory and degenerative pathways.

## What the Research Shows
In a direct comparison study, GHK-Cu produced superior improvements in skin density and thickness compared to vitamin C and retinoic acid after 12 weeks. Both were applied at therapeutic concentrations.
Retinol studies show consistent improvements in fine line depth and surface texture โ but at concentrations above 0.1%, irritation is nearly universal. GHK-Cu at research-grade concentrations produces minimal irritation and is suitable for sensitive skin.
## The Tolerance Factor
